Unit 11 introduced teaching receptive skills. The English language consists of four basic skills, receptive (reading and listening) and productive (speaking and writing); all four skills are important and if possible each one of them should be incorporated into a lesson. From this unit, I learnt that there are two reasons for reading and listening; sometimes these skills are used for a purpose and at other times they are used for entertainment. Readers and listeners utilize many skills when reading and listening, and their understanding of the context will depend on their expertise in multiple areas. Pre-existing knowledge of a subject, predictive skills, scanning, skimming, retaining detailed information, and deduction from context all aid in the understanding of a text. The language contained in a text, the topic and the task the students will perform can all affect the teaching of receptive skills. By carefully selecting texts and pre-teaching difficult vocabulary the language of a text can be less of an issue for the students. Moreover, by choosing a variety of topics throughout the language course and creating interest in a subject there is less likely to be a lack of motivation from the students in learning the material. Lastly, from unit 11 I learnt that choosing the right tasks is a very important part of teaching receptive skills; comprehension tasks that promote understanding should be provided to the students in order to help them learn reading and listening skills.
