Unit 11 discusses receptive skills - reading and listening - and how they play an important role when it comes to teaching a language. People usually read or listen for two different reasons. One reason would be to achieve some specific purpose. An example of this would be listening to directions to a location or instructions on how to use equipment. The second reason is for entertainment, such as listening to a joke or story that interests the reader or listener. Reading or listening to new material can be intimidating, especially when some of the vocabulary is new. For this reason, pre-teaching applicable vocabulary prior to an activity can be very beneficial. It is also important to be very picky when choosing which texts to cover to make sure that they are at the appropriate level of understanding for the learners. The material should be challenging but still realistic.
