In the age of globalization and technology, it is only natural that the ESL teachings are becoming established and far-reaching in the virtual world. Online teaching is quite different from traditional teaching but ESA methods can be applied in the lessons. A maximum of six to seven students can join the lesson. I have been an online teacher for two years and during this time I have taught six students simultaneously through a conference call but there might be some teachers teaching more students in a single lesson effectively. Online teaching is revolutionary as through the internet an English teacher can get access to students from all across the world and fine-tune their English skills. There are no geographical restrictions, with a click of a button a teacher is available for instant tutoring. Students of all levels can make use of online teachings. I have taught most of the countries in Europe which wouldn’t be possible if I was not an Online teacher. There is a lot of flexibility and convenience in the ESL online market. The general trend in online teaching is a personalized lesson with a single student. This is quite effective as the student’s individual needs are focused. The teacher is able to pinpoint and focus on the students. This can be for any specific purpose such as general English, business English, and young learners. A typical straight arrow lesson starts when the teacher and students connect on the internet. They start conversing, the teacher uses warmups to engage the student. He/She might review the grammar point learned in the previous class. The teacher gets the students talking and thinking in English. He/she will share the screen and show them a video or make them read the article and ask them some questions about that article. If it is a group class, through a conference call on skype or zoom, it will create dynamic and there will be bilingual or multilingual students sharing ideas. After that, the teacher will begin the study phase by eliciting vocabulary and writing on a digital whiteboard that is visible and opened in a browser on every student's computer. The teacher can include pronunciation and intonation practices and ask them to complete worksheets on the shared digital whiteboard. Here the roleplay and different games can be introduced. After that in the activate stage, the teacher will stimulate discussion and encourage students to give a presentation while using the vocabulary and grammar points learned during the study stage. Sometimes the class can be only informal conversation following no particular theme. Or it can be based on a specific idea or interest of students. This provides more talk time to students. During my lessons, I encourage recording the lesson by just enabling the record feature on skype. The students can return to this and notice their errors in grammar and pronunciations. It is very easy to get ESL pictures on the internet to use as prompts and visual cards. The teacher can paste them on the whiteboard and through pointer ask the students to define things. The colors of the pen can be changed with a click of a button. The background can be made more colorful. It is an interesting tool while teaching young learners. There are websites specializes in providing lesson plans such as “off to class”. There is material available on the British council website. If the teacher wants to teach a specific page or pdf it can be uploaded on the whiteboard. The teachers can attract the student through social media, through their newsletter, and personal websites. There are a lot of reputable websites where the teacher can make courses. These websites have video calling services available like Italki, Verbling, Preply, Verbal planet. These websites specially Verbling provides an inbuilt video calling service, digital whiteboards an array of tools needed to conduct the class in an effective manner. Italki is a well-developed language platform that has a growing band of professional teachers. In addition to this Bitpaper can be used which is an online digital whiteboard where teachers can implement the study stage by preparing lessons in advance. Share that with students who can get access to it from anywhere in the world. A reliable computer, fast internet connection, a good quality microphone, and the camera is needed to have a comfortable and smooth lesson. While teaching online across countries it is also very important for the teachers to have extremely good knowledge of time zone differences and hours when the student is more likely to be attentive. For example, according to the UTC time, Russian students are most active from 7:00-10:00 after which Chinese, European American students are active online from 10:00-22:00. An advantage of online language learning Is there are a lot of options available for the students they can select a teacher and can build connections and rapport with them. This also gives opportunities to students from Africa, Middle East, and South Asia. This is not a popular ESL market for teachers, the students also cannot afford to move to England to study English. Other resources to teach English online is to make a youtube channel. Or create a teaching course on Udemy etc. Here through editing software you can edit a video and make it visual and easy to understand. Nowadays there is a number of ESL teachers who started their English teaching podcasts. This is an excellent source of improving comprehension and listening for the students. As most of the adult students are working individuals they can usually listen to it on the metro, driving to their work, running or exercising. These podcast creators make their material available online on their website or on iTunes where the learner can download it directly into their phones. The example of such podcasts is "Luke's English Podcast" and "Canguro English". In conclusion, an English teacher can teach quite effectively online.
