I appreciated how thorough this chapter was--especially that the topic of pronunciation was not only limited to phonemes—because stress and intonation are indeed just as important for intelligibility. I was disappointed in some of the errors in the chapter, however. In particular, I have found that teaching my students the difference between a content question vs. a polar question (“yes-no question”) is MUCH more useful for helping them remember which questions take a rise/fall intonation (content questions) and which take a rising intonation (polar questions). The discussion in the unit also conflated the concepts of word stress and sentence or phrase level stress used for emphasis or contrast. These are two very different phenomena, and I find it’s useful to students to explain how they differ (as well as how they intersect).
