This unit discusses the pronunciation as a way a word is pronounced and the phonology, which is the science and classification of the physical properties of sounds. The areas of the phonology are intonation, stress and rhythm. Intonation is the variation of volume and pitch in a whole sentence. Some of the techniques for indicating and teaching information are nonsense words that get students speak with expression; gestures that indicate the direction of the pitch; humming and singing in order to hear the stress and the intonation; making marks on the board. Stress is more concerned in the individual words as the word that bears the principal emphasis in a sentence should be the one with the stress on. The techniques of indicating and teaching stress are contrastive stress when students perceive a sound that is voiced by placing it alongside one that is unvoiced; gesture as clapping and tapping on a desk; choral work as chatting or singing typical rhythms of English; underlying words on the board and putting stress marks. Sound joining examples are given through linking, sound dropping, extra lettering and sound changing. The phonemic alphabet is a set of symbols that represent the way we put sounds together to form words, as a table of the phonetics symbols is also provided. Articulation is the way we produce speech through not only through vocal chords, but also through some organs, as places and manners of articulation are also discussed. Some of the techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds are peer dictation, over - emphasising on teacher`s own mouth, drawing a mouth diagram, phonemes, tongue twisters.
