"If you have never hated by your child, you have never been a parent".- Bette Davis. For many years, education has been misunderstood as a form of conditioning, one which brings a tide of struggle, anxiety, fear and competition. Unfortunately,everyone-Parents,educators and students have contributed to spreading the false belief. The idea being sold about education is that you must attend a school to escape poverty; you must be able to amass much wealth before you are regarded as successful and you must conform to society's norms. J.Krishnamunti,in his book "Education and Significance of Life" Captures the right kind of education as not being concerned with any ideology. However, as much as it may promise a future utopia; it is not based on nor is it a means of conditioning the individual in some special manner. Education in the true sense is helping the individual to be mature and free. Its highest function is to bring about an integrated individual who is capable of dealing with life as a whole. Having put education in proper perspective, it is important to understand who a parent is. According to Wikipedia, "A Parent is a caregiver of the offspring in their own species". A biological parent is a person whose gamete resulted in a child, a male through the sperm and a female through the ovum. It is equally noteworthy that a parent may not have biological ties to a child. In this context, a parent is someone who loves their child unconditionally. This Older individual is usually responsible for the care, safety and shelter of the child. The parent's duties to the child include providing physical, emotional and spiritual support. These responsibilities also cover guidance from right and wrong, discipline and the education the child needs in a way that he/she is able to function within the family and the society. Parents are an integral part of a child's education. They are the first teachers who help to shape a child language and character. Research has shown that a child's actual learning is moulded by a balance between the home and the school, perhaps one of the greatest roles of parents in their kids' education is being a role model. Children draw a great deal of their inspiration in life from their parents. Examples abound of renowned professionals who took after their parents- George W.Bush (Former American President), Jaden Smith ( Son of Hollywood Star, Will Smith), Aliko Dangote (Grandson of wealthy trader, Alhassan Dantata), among others. Furthermore, parents support their children's education by prioritizing their educational needs. This includes the provision of relevant resources and the payment of school fees in a way parents can exert some checks on their children for all-round education. for example, Unnecessary trips and functions which may affect their study schedule may be discouraged. Unwarranted absenteeism should also be discouraged. Related closely to this is the parents' participation in school events like parents' forum and Open days. These duties may appear tasking particularly for busy parents, however, this commitment has been found to enhance their children's academic achievement. Traditionally, homework is given to involve the parents in the education of their kids.Though parents cannot every assignment for their children, they are expected to provide assistance with assignments and projects. The culture of "Do-it-together" produces better results. Children's education is greatly influenced by home support in the form of extra tutoring, mini-tests and the culture of diligence. Finally, parents play an important role of monitoring their children's progress and motivating them. it is important to reward milestones in their studies by buying them gifts when they do well in their tests. Besides school learning, parents' active role in their children's education help equip them with better social skills and improved behaviour. Education is a total experience that is deeply rooted in culture. A parents' role in the moulding process of a child stem from how much of culture is exemplified before academic/intellectual engagements begin. In the words of Bob Keeshan " Parents are the Ultimate role models for children.Every word, movement and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent". References www.wikipedia.org www.edsys.in https://screenrant.com https://kfoundation.org
