The relationship does not have to be one of friendship, and in fact, studies show that students respond more favorably when the teacher provides more guidance instead of being more permissive. Positive behavior support is a means of eliminating the need for punishment when it came to student behavior by promoting positive behavior. It is an effective system for managing student behavior. Strong teacher-student relationships have long been considered a foundational aspect of a positive school experience Authoritative teaching is a classroom management style that provides firm, realistic boundaries for your child in a compassionate way. An authoritative teacher focuses on maintaining high standards and projecting genuine warmth. No child is expected to come into the classroom and immediately start producing. The authoritative teacher is ideal, though this approach is easier said than done. This teacher has a positive, kind and supportive relationship with her students, but they know when she “means business.” Because she has an effective discipline plan and her classroom is orderly, the students trust her and respect her. There is more time for academics. This teacher feels empowered and energized because she sees positive growth and development in her students. Her students feel safe as well as capable. In a happy classroom setting, a child's academic, emotional and social needs are addressed. Happiness and positive emotions create dopamine and serotonin. When these substances are released into the brain it has positive effects on our memory as well as our brain's ability to learn. The chemicals increase the brain's capacity to make connections and make connections faster. Effective classroom management starts with relationship building. When students feel a greater sense of belonging, they’re more likely to be academically engaged and demonstrate positive behavior. Classroom management, especially with elementary and junior high age students, never ends. It is an ongoing process, but once the foundation is laid, it only takes occasional reminders.
