I worked as an Online English teacher for two years in two different companies. One is a home-based job and another is an office-based job. These experiences had bought me to where I am today. I am teaching Chinese kindergarten students in Shanghai, China for the past four months now. Let me walk you through my previous jobs. My first job was with a Chinese company. I taught Chinese Students online, wherein there was a wide range of ages (3 - 60 years old) through the largest group that falls between 4 - 12 years old. We were trained to teach young learners effectively through building rapport, effective warm-up activities like singing songs or by playing games, techniques on how to catch their attention and so on. The lesson includes one student in a 25 minutes class. We have an online classroom in which the lesson is provided by the company. The schedule of my work depends on me, as I can plot my own time but normally I teach for 7-8 hours a day in a week with just one rest day when I’m still a full-time teacher. However, when I got a full-time job, I became a part-time teacher at this company and taught the students for 3-4 hours on weekdays and 6 hours on the weekends. Thereafter, I had another job that became my fulltime job. Here, I taught Korean and Japanese students online. There are different types of classes in this company. The following are web class, phone class, group class, and mono class. The class time could also vary there is 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes class. Here, we teach the students depending on their level from low beginner to expert learner. I also assessed essays from Korean students with different correction categories. I worked on weekdays and my shift started at 5 in the morning and ended at 2 in the afternoon. In both of these jobs, I have taught the correct usage of the English language in oral and written communication to the students. I also educated them on proper spoken and written use of English to enhance their classroom and even job skills. When I teach students, I used alternative teaching strategies to help students progress and learn more effectively. Other than that, I always ensure to establish an environment that encourages students to learn, increase their interest in English and hold their attention in a fun and exciting way. The only differences were their culture. It is also my responsibility to adjust my approach depending on the nationality of my student. Now, I am very grateful to have experienced teaching my students of various cultures, ages and different walks of life. I feel so fulfilled whenever they thanked me for helping them even in a short period of time. I do not just help them improved but they also helped me to be what I am today. I would never see myself not teaching anymore. I discover what I really love, that is to share my knowledge with these students and not just to help them be better and confident speakers of English but to let them enjoy and explore a new language that could open up their worlds to new opportunities and relationships. The impact on both the students’ and teachers’ life through ESL is really a remarkable one.
