According to the website, Infoplease, there are approximately 6,500 languages spoken throughout the world. Of these languages, some are more prevalent than others, while some are only spoken by a small number of people. In fact, there are 2,000 languages only spoke by less than 1,000 people. Because of the diverse languages spoken around the world, it is important to have a common language to facilitate communication among the seven and a half billion people. To address the language gap, English has emerged as one the most common languages spoken. While its not the most spoken language (917 million people speak Mandarin and 460 million speak Spanish), according to Babbel.com, native English speakers equate to approximately 379 million and 753 million call upon English as a second language. As a global language, English remains as the top language for students to learn. English is listed as the official language in over 50 countries. As listed in World Population Review, large countries that list English as a de facto national language include the United States, India, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. These major countries have significant political and economical influence around the world. With the United States having 330 million people who naturally speak English it makes sense that for other countries, especially developing countries, to be able to clearly communicate with those from a developed country. Why is it important that a standard language exist? It is easy to say one should simply look within a country’s borders to solve its problems and meet the needs of its people. The reality, however, is that we live in a global world. This means that countries need to interact with other countries. People need to communicate with other people who speak different languages. In a very macro sense, countries need to engage in trade activities to meet the needs of its people. These trade activities bring in goods that the country is not able to provide. For instance, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, China is the largest trade partner with the United States with $660 billion worth of goods transferring between the two countries. The only way that the trade can be successful between the countries is through clear communication between trading partners. This is an on-gong dialog that relies on clearly understanding the needs of one another. Without having a single language, the trading would not exist. While it is possible to use translation tools, it is not an effective way to conduct business. It can be said that Mandarin could be considered a global language, but the reality is that English is far easier to learn than Mandarin. Considering that the Latin alphabet is the most widely used alphabet in the word (according to Encyclopedia Britannica), learning English would come easier than using the traditional Chinese alphabet. English has and will continue to be a global language, especially as the world becomes more inter-connected. Whether its trade or simply communicating to a fellow gamer online, people will want to embrace the English language. https://www.infoplease.com/askeds/how-many-spoken-languages https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/the-10-most-spoken-languages-in-the-world http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/english-speaking-countries/ https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/china-mongolia-taiwan/peoples-republic-china https://www.britannica.com/topic/Latin-alphabet
