Learning English at an early stage is very beneficial for a child. Especially nowadays since Hong Kong is an international city, the children are encouraged to learn 2 languages at the same time which is why majority of the people in Hong Kong are bilingual. A child's brain is learning and changing more during language acquisition in the first six years of life than during any other cognitive ability therefore, learning a language at an early stage for children is an easier way to adapt to a new language because the sooner they learn, the better it is for them to understand the language and adapt it in their lifestyle. From my perspective, the Teachers can integrate English storytelling into their teaching because of its many advantages. Firstly, I would like to state is, stories reinforce the importance in the development of an individual's social and emotional abilities, cognitive growth plus creativity that encourages free thinking and the formation of innovative ideas. Secondly, it reinforces language development. In my opinion and the current situation around the globe is that nowadays children are glued to their tabs or phones due to the advanced technology they tend to watch videos or movies instead of reading or having to listen to a story from an adult. This delays their motivation to actually imagine something from their own minds or even like most cases it may lead to speech delay. During the early stages of early childhood, it is vital for children to use their imagination fully and we can achieve that by adopting storytelling in a child’s lifestyle. In this way we can not only expand their imagination but also boost their language development. Teachers and parents can encourage and act on this situation. For example, In a classroom of age 3-6, a teacher can do a storytelling he/she may finish the story first and then the teacher may ask children some questions in order to observe how much each child has picked the information during the storytelling. A teacher will do this to understand how each individual has comprehended the story in english language and observe what to work on more so as to understand the pace of the children in the class depending on the age group. I think this way will help the children grow in terms of language development because they get a chance to verbally practise the language. Another example can be, A teacher can do an interactive story telling with the children in english. Teacher can ask questions in between the story and ask children to predict what will happen next. This will help children get more expressive plus this will also encourage them to think and get more creative with the story or may make small changes in the story and have some fun at the same time. For example, acting out a story in a role-play can be extremely beneficial for a child’s language development. A simple script can improve a child’s language ability. A child will be acting out and saying the dialogues at the same time which improves a child’s cognitive development as well as the pronunciation. It will also boost a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Thirdly, Storytelling also fulfils a crucial need of children by providing exemplary role models through their characters. For example, take a well-known classic The Hare And The Tortoise as an example. Such stories have some morals that teach children a lesson or there is a certain character that a child gets inspired from. This story teaches how vital hard work is and to never give up on yourself and strive for the best. In a nutshell, Encouragement is essential the teachers should encourage the children to respond back in english, use interactive ways and have fun in class by role-play or games.
