Games play an important role in keeping the students motivated and positive while learning English. As a teacher, we don`t want our students to just sit in the classroom bored, too shy to speak, and learn nothing. We want to engage them by having them use their English and have fun. It is not what a teacher teaches, but how a teacher teaches that motivates the students. This is why teachers should use games in the classroom, because games can help cover different areas in teaching, and can be a support content, and help deepen and strengthen the students learning. How exactly can a teacher motivate his/her students and help create a positive attitude while learning English? Games are activities which have rules we need to follow, but at the same time engage the students and induce fun. They help us set goals and also work as wonderful classroom material. Playing games in the classroom can help students with their vocabulary and grammar skills, reduce stress, and teach them sportsmanship. There are many different types of games which can be played in the classroom: games played by an individual, or as a team, and even some played against the teacher. When playing games, students need to keep in mind the important details on the topic they have learned, but at the same time their minds have to work fast in order to think and act quickly. When choosing a game to play in the classroom, a teacher must choose one which is fun, and that will motivate the students, but at the same time keep them focused on the subject. Playing the same game over and over can become tedious for the students, so different games should be used in the classroom. Changing the rules of the game, or making up a game can help teachers to develop their imaginations. Games played in the classroom help students learn faster, stay alert, be competitive, work as a team, use their memory, and build knowledge. One of the most important things that students learn by playing games in the classroom is teamwork. After leaving school, and going out to the real world, they will need to function as a team. Games can help students to work effectively as a team, teach respect to one another, and teach problem solving. Sometimes a teacher may have to put two students that don`t get along with each other on the same team. In this case they will have to work as a team and try to solve the problem. Sometimes games can help students see the progress of other students, and create in them a competitive spirit, thus motivating them to strive to learn more. Games can help students be creative with the language they are learning and connect the students to each other. They can also be used to revisit topics learned in the past, and help students dig into the reservoir of knowledge they have learned. And best of all, teachers can benefit from these game activities by using games to gain valuable feedback about each student`s learning and engagement capabilities. The teacher can assess each student`s vocabulary and grammar needs. So we can say that there are great benefits of using games in the classroom. They help motivate the students to engage in the language they are learning, work as a team, build memory, and help the overall development of the students.
