Parents play a vital role in their child’s education. Parents, teachers and the school need to work together for an effective and successful learning environment. Parents are the first educators of their children, and as it is always said that ‘charity begins at home’. Motivation and support from parents for learning activities at home coupled with parental involvement in schooling is very imperative to children’s education. Studies have shown that parental encouragement (of various kinds) has a strong positive impact on the success of their children. Parents need to provide a consistent productive learning environment for their children. Parents’ roles are not limited only at home but are also applicable in school activities too. A balance of education at home and school can help children to grow up with better social skills and improved behaviour. A child’s learning scale is practically linked to how they are treated at home. The following are some of the roles parents can adopt to help with their child’s education: Be a role model: Parents are the first teachers for their children and therefore, children learn the first things at home. The parent needs to be a positive role model for the child in helping to shape the child's ideas and behaviour about education. Parents should guide and inspire their children throughout the learning stage. Provide a supportive environment in the house: Parents should provide a pleasant, quiet and organized atmosphere at home for learning. It is vital for parents to consider the importance of their study life and provide them with the necessary moral support. It is always not encouraging to discuss family problems in the presence of the children and to stir up unnecessary quarrels at home. Monitor how the child learns: Parents should properly monitor their learning at home and other activities such as their leisure time in order to guide them in an appropriate direction. They should not be forced to do anything but parents need to provide friendly pieces of advice. Ensure that the child is not over-scheduled: It is necessary not to over schedule their learning activities at home. Parents should help their children schedule their learning and homework time, and also play and rest time in order to maintain a balance between learning and extra activities for a quality study life. Maintain parent teacher relationship: It is good for parents to connect with their child’s teacher and school. By working together, staff and parents can maintain a high quality of education for children. Parents should always endeavor to attend the parent teacher meetings which also show their interest in their children’s education. Help with homework: Parents need to provide support and help their children. Parents should talk to their kids about homework and provide some tips and guidance in doing it. They shouldn’t actually do it for them. They should also check if the kid has finished doing the assignment. Parents may also find help outside of the home, a tutor, for instance when need be. Praise and Encouragement: Praising and encouraging the kids provide them the spirit to perform better with studies. Good motivation is an important factor for children to become successful learners. Create time to read together: To keep a good parent- child relationship, it is important for parents to create time to read together with their children. Parents can encourage kids to read by themselves or have their children read to them and vice versa. They can make trips during their free times to local library. It is obvious that the role parents play to their children is enormous. Besides teaching children in schools, parents’ active role during their educational life requires investment of time, and can help them achieve better grades at school and grow up with better social skills and higher self-esteem.
