Should a parent learn English too? I truly believe that learning English is for everybody no matter which country we came from. if you’re a parent coming from a non-English speaking country and you have a child that is studying English. then I think you must try to educate yourself. It would be very frustrating if you can’t even teach your child a simple alphabet with proper pronunciation. And there are some activities at school that parents need to be present. what if your child comes home with a homework and they need your help? And you can’t read it. Uh-oh should I call 911 then? that is one of many reasons why educating yourself is a must. literacy is important and that’s non- negotiable. some parents have their reason why they ‘re not good at English. They are so busy earning money just to make sure that his or her family needs are provided. they don’t have a free time. and the list goes on and on. but that doesn’t mean that you should give up easily. Because there are a lot of ways to learn English. First is by doing it online. Thanks to our advance technology. You can watch videos and they are very informative as if you are learning it in a classroom. Teaching you basic words, it’s meaning, proper pronunciation and the proper usage. The good thing about that is that you can watch it again and again until you got it right. And then you can move on to another video. There are thousands of videos available specifically on YouTube. and its free all you need is internet connection/mobile data, smartphone, desktop/laptop. second, you can visit the public library and there are educational cd’s that you can borrow. You just need a cd player and your good to go. they also have some DVD's. Third, if you have a smartphone then you can download an English learning application and you can choose what level you want to start. Their platform is fun and easy to navigate and it’s for free and you can also access it offline. You can also make friends with your kid's parents and if they’re friendly and generous enough then you can learn English together. If you’re a parent that lives in an English-speaking country then you don’t have a choice but to learn it period. It could be a big advantage though. because English will be naturally acquired as you go through your daily life. I have a lot of Asian friends that is living here in the U.S. and one of my Korean friend told me that her 96- year old mom is learning English by watching Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer. That being said, although she is retired it doesn’t stop her from learning English. Because as long as were still breathing there is no such thing as “it’s too late”. I am married but don’t have kids. it wouldn’t hurt to learn English so why not.
