Before I did any research on TEFL courses, I looked up online about teaching English aboard. When researching the prospective countries that I might want to teach in, I thought about what I might need to do before applying. The first step was to complete my bachelor’s in English degree which I will have it finished in May. After finding information about teaching English in Japan, I looked over information about teaching English in South Korea. That was when I found out that most programs in South Korea require applicants to have a TEFL certificate. From there, I decided on searching for a credible TEFL course online, so that I could do take the course while taking my university classes. While many people think that this might be too much work just to teach overseas, I feel like it was extremely helpful in preparing me for my prospective career in teaching English aboard. I thought that I would know most of the information as my major is English literature, but when I started to work on the units, I was completely wrong. Starting with unit one to unit twenty, each unit provided more information on a variety of topics compared to what I learned from my professors. When I completely unit one with ease, I thought that the units were not going to be hard, but it was the opposite. Especially on the units that had to do with grammar and other parts of English, I realized that I was not that knowledgeable in those topics after completing the tests and seeing my scores. Taking this online TEFL course helped me with preparing for any situations from having a large class to dealing with students who might not have strong English proficiency. Taking a TEFL course help future teachers to be prepared for what they might face in their career overseas, but it also helps teachers who are currently teaching overseas now. Some of the current teachers could have never taken a TEFL course before, and they could have been struggling with making lesson plans or how to connect with their students. I feel like having this type of experience with not having a TEFL certificate, the students of those teachers might have a disadvantage in their learning. Now I understand if the teacher has a bachelor’s in education or has previous teaching experience in their home country, but that is with students who already know their home language. Taking a TEFL helps those teachers prepare for teaching students who is either just learning English or who has a basic vocabulary of English and wants to obtain more in the language. Splitting the units up, there are about ten units on grammar and parts of the English language, and then the other ten were about how to teach those students and what the teachers might experience with the technology or with different ages of students. Websites like ITTT or in-person courses have ways of providing information to the students to where they could keep it with them as they travel overseas. Such as ITTT has the option of downloading each unit and being able to keep it on their computer to reference later or to read over again when they are stuck and confused about what to do. Another thing that those who take the TEFL course has an advantage compared to others is that most TEFL courses provide worksheets at the end to where the prospective teachers could practice what they learned in the unit before taking the test. Like how ITTT provided the task sheets at the end, I was able to practice each unit before I took the unit test and could go back and read over the information on the questions that I did not understand. Before applying to any teaching programs aboard, I would recommend the person to take a TEFL course online or in person. The TEFL course provides information on how to teach English to non-English speakers and how to prepare the teachers for situations that they might experience. Most courses also provide those who take the courses with services after completing the course such as helping them in finding a job and aiding the applicant when they need assistance.
