Every student learns and works a little differently from the next. As a teacher in an EFL classroom, these learning differences are multiplied by each student’s knowledge and confidence in this new language. It is up to the teacher to make the students feel comfortable in the classroom while challenging them to learn more English. The teacher has to incorporate individual and group work in their lesson plans to teach their variety of students. Teaching one on one is beneficial to the student because the teacher can work on exactly what the student needs and wants to learn. However, teaching in groups allows students to learn from their peers and build up their confidence. Therefore both types of learning are beneficial to a student learning English. Teaching one on one works best for a student that wants to learn English for a specific purpose like business or a specific subject in school. For these specific learners, the teacher should conduct a needs analysis to figure out what the student needs from the course. This can be a sheet of questions for the student or just a conversation when you are one on one. Then the teacher can personalize the lesson for the student. One on one teaching and learning is also good for the student because they can have a lot of conversation with the teacher who will have the correct pronunciation. Speaking and listening are two of the four productive and receptive skills that students need to know. However, students should also learn to read and write just as well. Even in a one on one class, the student needs to take time to read and write on their own. Then the teacher can assist and give feedback. It is important to have a variety of lessons/activities for the student each day to keep them engaged. Some activities that can be used are reading and discussing the news, using magazines, music, recipes, and photographs. All of these resources help to build up a variety of vocabulary to be used in daily life. There are even more options for activities when there is a group of students. Teaching a fuller classroom allows students to talk to each other and learn from their peers. While students in the group may be at slightly different levels, they can help each other out by building up their confidence. More reserved students may not want to speak in front of the whole class, so the teacher has to provide an opportunity for pairs and small groups. Additionally, students can practice through role-play, games, or asking each other questions. Just like a one on one classroom, a group should be taught a variety of skills from working with the teacher, in a group, and on their own. The teacher needs to have individual assessments of the students to see how each is doing in the class. Throughout the course, the teacher should have formative and summative assessments to track the progress and achievements of the students. The teacher can also monitor students’ progress daily through questioning and listening. Formative and summative assessments should be given to one on one students as well. All of the assessments and activities should be written into the lesson plan. The teacher of a one on one classroom or group classroom has to have a plan while remaining flexible. The teacher should not rush through the plan if the student(s) do not understand the topic of the lesson. Flexibility is also important for teachers because sometimes students want to go on a tangent that gets them talking more with the teacher and their peers and it is okay for them to be interested in the subject. In both classroom settings, it is up to the teacher to let the students be interested and engaged while balancing the lesson/classroom management. Classroom management is not a big factor when teaching one on one, but must be considered when teaching a group classroom. Teachers must learn all of the student’s names in the classroom and address each of them during the class period. No one student should be favored over another. The teacher also needs to consider the classroom arrangement so that the students can focus on the teacher or be in groups to work with each other. In either type of classroom, the teacher must establish good rapport with the student(s) to build a positive and respectful relationship. Teaching groups involves more factors for teachers to plan for because of different student levels and behaviors. However, it can be rewarding for the students to learn and interact with their peers. Teaching an individual is also rewarding because the teacher can see specifically where the student has grown in their language learning. Both ways of teaching English are useful for the student.
