In the classroom, for teaching to be successful, there are a number of factors which help the teaching and learning process be more effective. We can list some of them here: creating a good classroom atmosphere, building relationships with students, the moods of the teacher and students, and the materials or teaching aids, like course books, lesson plans and other previously designed materials. Whether you are a good or moderate artist, creating teaching materials adds much value to your teaching. They should be relevant to the lesson, support student learning, and clarify complicated instruction. In this essay we will explore the importance of creating teaching materials. First of all, what are teaching materials? The Rwandan Ministry of Education defines them as, "a generic term used to describe the resources teachers use to deliver instruction." They add that, “teaching materials can support student learning and increase student success. Ideally, the teaching materials will be tailored to the content in which they're being used, to the students in whose class they are being used, and towards the teacher. Teaching materials come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have in common the ability to support student learning." As seen in this definition, teaching materials are paramount in the classroom and should be used as a teacher's tool to achieve lessons goal and objectives. The teacher should create those materials due to a series of reasons. First, course books are not enough to boost learners’ excitement towards lessons. Sometimes they are designed from different cultures and you find out that they are sometimes not relevant to the culture that the teacher is teaching in. This situation would require the teacher to create materials that would work in congruence with the course book so as to wake learners’ excitement. Second, created materials change the classroom atmosphere and regardless of the teacher's artistic ability, the materials reflect the teacher's creativity and passion. If he or she makes teaching materials with love, it induces learners energy and can warm them in any stage of learning. Also because they are created by the teacher who was thinking about the lesson material and the students’ learning process, the materials should work effectively Third, creating materials is in the section of preparation. It helps the teacher more clearly understand the lesson and gives them the opportunity to remove all problems he/she may face during lesson delivery. By creating the materials you must know in which lessons you’ll use them, which part of each lesson, as well as how and why you will use them. Creating materials establishes a connection between the teacher and the lesson which is reflected in the students’ ability to better understand the lesson content. It also ultimately builds confidence in your teaching because you know that you are delivering your creation. In conclusion, creating materials helps facilitate smooth lessons which leads to an increase in teaching confidence and student learning. By making the teacher understand more about his/her lesson, the teacher can better motivate learners and positively impact the classroom atmosphere.
