Did you know that over one billion people speak English in the world? (Ask google) Moreover, most of these people are not native English speakers. That is why, if you want to be a language teacher, your right choice will be teaching English. I noticed that after completing the course in the TEFL program I will have better opportunities as the program is accredited. Upon completion of the course, I expanded and enhanced my knowledge of the English language. The price, and the time, was affordable. There is no doubt that the TEFL course has given me so much in my life as English instructor. As I searched online for an ESL training program, I found myself focusing on the TEFL course because it is an accredited program. This program has been recognized in dozens of countries around the world and when the college I’ve been working at for the past three years asked me about teaching an ESL program, this was the right choice for me. TEFL opened up an opportunity, one that I’d been looking for, for me to take on the role of an ESL teacher within my current institution. They are more than willing to accept this certification so I can take on this role. When I got the chance to take this course online, I had a great opportunity to extend and increase my knowledge of the English language. This course encompasses twenty units and the most remarkable units for me were chapter 3: Theories, Methods and Techniques. In this chapter, learning about the ESA methods was so new for me but, little by little, I was gathering knowledge. The stages, purpose, and the typical activities in the different types of ESA lesson like Straight-arrow, Boomerang, and Patchwork; these methods are essential to teach ESL English. Furthermore, the ESA lesson was used in the other chapters as well. Chapter 5: Managing Classes was another important unit that shows me how I can use my eyes, voice, and gestures to manage a classroom. It taught about the pros and cons of grouping students for classroom activities based on the type of student arrangements possible: whole class, group, pair work, and individuals. Using students’ names helps to create a positive relationship with them and allows them to feel more comfortable. Orderly rows, horseshoe seating, and separate tables should be considered in how a class is set up to allow for a more productive class time. Rapport building and discipline in the classroom and more were touched on in this unit. Unit 11 and 12 teaches Receptive (reading and listening) and Productive Skills (speaking and writing) and it enlarged my understanding of these skills. Learning the difference between accuracy and fluency was extremely important; accuracy is used in the study phase and fluency is used in the activate phase. Again, if you do not have knowledge of how to use these four skills, you will fail despite using the ESA methods. Unit 19: Teaching Special Groups really caught my attention because of the different classifications of special groups, especially Business English. Business English is the next course I plan to complete; I picked it without any understanding of what it entailed, but now, with the skills learned in the course, I feel confident that I will be able to complete this course without difficulty. I did not mention all of the units included, but it does not mean that the rest are any less important. I enjoyed, learned, and improved with every single chapter and I do not regret taking this class online. When deciding on whether or not I’d take this online class, the last thing I considered was the price and timing. I checked on pricing and found that ITTT has very competitive prices compared to other like ESLteacherEDU.org or GoAbroad. A 120 hour course would allow you to complete it in six months, which was enough time to finish without issue. One thing that helped, as well, was the availability of a tutor that I could use during the course, in addition to a number of free videos for each unit, designed to help me further my understanding. In conclusion, completing the TEFL course strengthened my skills and gave me more confidence in my abilities. I am going to get a diploma from an accredited institution, recognized internationally, with a reasonable price and time frame. I am now in a position where I have gained a number of techniques and skills that I did not have before. The program reinforced my previous knowledge and provided me with new information as well. I feel like I’ve won something and my students are going to be able to benefit from that win as well.
