First, it is important to know that classroom management involves organization of the class, being approachable, as well as maintaining discipline within the classroom. This is imperative as it established rapport and respect with the students. To start, it is important for a teacher to have an intentional presence in the classroom. Three ways to do this are through eye contact, gesture, and utilization of voice. A few ways to use eye contact in the classroom is to engage each and every student, to indicate who is to speak, to check class participation, and as mentioned above to maintain discipline. A few appropriate ways to use gesture within the classroom is to reinforce instruction, increase the pace of the lesson, and to reduce the need for verbal expression. When using your voice, you should be attentive to the needs to the classroom. Depending on the environment and circumstance is how the teacher will determine the appropriate usage of their voice. Second, when teaching English Language Learners is is helpful to group students. Grouping students can help productivity by dispersing and delegating teacher responsibly to aid with a larger class size, utilizing more advanced students to help others, encouraging more intentional conversation and the practice of English between students, and creating a classroom environment that feels safe and encouraging for students to be bold in practicing English. The teacher can group students through whole class grouping, individual work, pair work, and group work. Though each of these have advantages, they also each have disadvantages. It is imperative for the teacher to monitor classroom needs and determine which classroom set up is suitable for certain times. Paired with class grouping is classroom arrangement. Physical arrangement of the classroom can send students in the directive of the objectives the teacher is aiming for. When thinking about classroom arrangement the teacher must consider available space, the types of tables of desks being utilized, the age of the students, their nationality in order to maintain rapport and be respectful in return, and the students’ personalities. When considering student groups, their productivity as well as their feelings must be considered. You can simply pair a stronger student with a weaker student or you can even pair students as a matter of discipline. It is important to intentionally avoid problematic pairs that will hinder the learning environment. Third, as briefly stated above, it is imperative to establish rapport with your students. Depending on the respect that you have and give within the teaching position will greatly determine the productivity and enjoyability of the class. If a student is lacking an appropriate connection with their teacher or if there is a lack on either end, this may increase self-doubt and low self-esteem in learning the new language. A few strategies to help establish rapport are helping everyone in the classroom to get to know one another at least a little, varying the time between individual, group, and pair work, giving clear instruction, showing personal interest in the students, smiling, and creating a positive classroom atmosphere. In Conclusion, practicing your intentional presence and body language, separating students into group, pair, and individual work groups, and being careful and thoughtful about establishing rapport with your students are all a part of classroom management. When a classroom is managed properly, it creates an environment where students feel welcomed and excited to learn and practice English.
