Learning English as a foreign language can influence a student’s future career in a plethora of ways. While some of these ways may directly impact a career choice, others will impact the student as a whole. Learning a foreign language can engage the brain to keep it active and increase concentration, improve an individual’s self-confidence, provide a wider range of career options and even help a student climb the ladder of success in whichever career they choose. Many large companies have a need for bilingual or multilingual employees, thus if a candidate is monolingual there is a higher chance of them being overlooked by a potential employer. According to a 2012 study conducted by Lund University, when an individual learns a foreign language the hippocampus and the superior temporal gyrus portions of the brain (where we retain language) grow. This was observed during the study by MRI scans taken of individuals at 3-month intervals. The growth thus shows increased brain activity. In an additional study conducted by one, Dr. Thomas Bak, of Edinburgh’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, it was concluded that “young adults that are proficient in two languages performed better on attention tests and had better concentration than those who spoke only one language,” regardless of what age the second language was obtained. Being able to speak a foreign language can improve self-confidence by giving the student/foreign language speaker opportunities to engage with people they normally wouldn’t or couldn’t because of their lack of language skills. Having the ability to speak a foreign language can be a conversation starter at group gathering and people tend to find it interesting. Often, when people find a skill that one possesses interesting it can make the person with the skill feel important thus increasing their confidence. With an improved ability to concentrate and a greater level of self-confidence, students are more likely to seek out job opportunities that would have been closed to them prior to learning the foreign language. For example, if a student wanted to apply to a large, Chinese based, multinational company that assisted clients in North American and the United Kingdom, the students need for high English proficiency would be much greater than that of a career at a company that serves a smaller cliental that perhaps speak the students native language. When applying to this multinational company, the bilingual candidate will have a more likely chance of success within the company than that of a candidate that is monolingual. Understanding a foreign language can also aid in advancement within a company; perhaps by an individual’s superior seeing their ability to reach and communicate with a wider range of clientele. Foreign language can also open doors to international travel; whether it be with a multinational company or perhaps as a flight attendant for an international airline. Without a doubt, becoming bilingual or multilingual has the potential to improve the outcome and direction of lives and careers; giving way to otherwise inaccessible networking connections, career opportunities and advancement, improved social and professional skills, international travel, and scientifically proven increased brain growth, activity, concentration, and certainly health.
