Motivation is the act of giving a reason or reason to carry out a task and or function. In today’s society schools are becoming more and more diverse and as such it gives teachers as well as students an extra task to try and learn about individuals in their surroundings. As we all know a student’s background plays a role in the student’s receptive and productive skills. Hence the reason for building rapport with students. Not all students are self-motivated and so teachers would need to motivate students as well as encourage them to develop self-motivation. Motivating students is important as it promotes learning, growth and self-development and reduction of truancy in schools. Firstly, motivation promotes learning. A student can become tired and bored during a lesson especially if they do not understand what is happening in the class and as such the teacher would need to come up with ways of keeping her class active and interesting as well as ensuring that these said students are learning. One such way is by motivating the students. Motivation can be done in different forms or ways. It can be verbal motivation where the teacher would give the students a motivational speech about the importance of education and learning. The teacher could motivate the students by playing games in between or at the end of the lesson if students participated in the learning exercise as well as giving gifts to students when they get their classwork, homework and even test correctly such as a certificate of achievement or just even a simple sticker. With all these different forms or ways of motivation highlighted it would encourage the students to always be attentive in class. Secondly, motivation also promotes growth and self-development. When a teacher motivates a student it does not just promote learning it helps to boost their confidence level because they know that the teacher will be there to guide them which in return links right back to the promotion of learning. For example, a student is not clear of a topic or question so he would need to ask the teacher to explain whether openly so his classmates may hear or one to one with the teacher. A teacher can also motivate a student to do so many things that will be beneficial to the student that will, in fact, allow the student to grow and develop him/herself which would become beneficial to the learning process. This is so because the student will be able to participate actively in the class and assist his/her classmates. Finally, the motivation of students can reduce the truancy level in school. Truancy is when a student stays away from school. Truancy can occur in school because of the lack of motivation from either the student, family or simply the school in its entirety. Motivating students does not only take place with teachers but also with the principal and other staff members as well as students. Principals can motivate students indirectly by making it mandatory for the teachers to take students on field trips or even having functions and social events for students as well as implementing breakfast programs and recess. Another way to motivate students to eliminate the level of truancy is by giving students a certificate for their attendance in school. This will encourage students to attend school which will promote learning, self-growth, and self-development. It is important to motivate students because it promotes learning, self-development, and growth.
