Future tenses follow the same structure as past and present tenses, with the exception of the ‘going to’ tense and a future form of the present simple and present continuous tenses. The ‘going to’ tense follows the structure of a subject, plus and auxiliary verb of ‘to be’ (e.g. am, is, are) plus ‘going to’ and then the base form of the verb. For example, ‘I am going to read that book’. Present simple and present continuous sentences can have implications about the future in the meaning of the sentence which can make it a future tense. For example; ‘The train is leaving.’ is a present simple sentence in the present tense, but ‘The train is leaving in two minutes time.’ is in the future tense because the event of the train leaving is only going to happen in the future.
