From completing this course, I feel that I have gained new skills and knowledge connected with teaching english as a foreign language. I hope to put all my new-found skills into practice in a classroom. I believe that I have learned how to control large classes and deal with any troublesome students effectively, how to make lessons fun and enjoyable to keep the students attention and interest. I have learned how to introduce items into lessons in order to make learning easier and more fun. I have realised that you don?t necessarily have to follow a course book to teach a class, you can incorporate outside activities and materials, making the class more interesting, thus reducing repetition and boredom. I acknowledge and will adapt the characteristics needed to be a ?good? teacher. I think that I now know how to react in certain situations, how to deal with behavioral problems, and how to manage the class in general. I have learned about the different tenses and fun ways to teach them, I have also learned how to teach pronunciation efficiently and effectively. I have broadened my knowledge of the different methods of teaching, of mistakes that are commonly made and how to rectify them. I have also learned how to accept feedback from students and teachers alike. I?ve definitely learned how to plan a lesson in the correct manner, and how to make sure you are getting the lesson across to students effectively. I now realize the importance of the use of gestures, eye contact and body language when teaching, as well as controlling your voice and tone. I?ve learned about the receptive and productive skills, how to test them and also how to use them in lessons. I am now more aware about speech, both direct and reported, how they differ and when they are to be used. I have gained the skills to teach pronunciation, phonetics, grammar and spelling. I have seen firsthand a teacher demonstrating teaching well and badly teaching a class, and have learned a lot from this, both things to take into consideration and things to avoid doing in the classroom. I?ve learned about the different types of equipment teachers may have access to in the classroom/school. I?ve learned about the importance of exams and acknowledged the different exams students have to prepare for, what is entailed in each exam and what the exams are for. I have learned how to evaluate the students and their progress in the class. I have learned about teaching different groups such as individual tutoring; young learners; adults; monolingual and multilingual students, problems teachers may encounter and how to avoid or overcome such problems. I plan to put all the above skills and knowledge into practice to teach foreign students the english language.
