One of the main things that I have learned from taking this course is that as a native speaker there is so much about the english language known innately, and to break down that innate knowledge and teach subtle grammar structures is extremely difficult. Having taught for 2 years before taking this course, I was not aware just how much of such knowledge I have taken for granted. Therefore, having learned the steps of proper lesson planning and how to break lessons down into three distinctive categories (engage, study and active phase) it has helped me grasp truly what structures are necessary for successful teaching and learning. Like I have already mentioned, I have taught english to non-native speakers for 2 years, and having had no formal training, many of my teaching skills where learned through trial and error and since they were developed naturally, I have never known as to whether they were ?proper? or not, I just knew that they effective. So, coming out of this course, I feel satisfied that much of my teaching is correct, and now I am able to give many of my skills a proper designated title. In addition, I am able to know why such skills are effective and even more, I have been able to learn how to go beyond basic skills and expand on them to something even more effective. One of the most important lessons from this course that I have learned is to make the lessons both teacher and student centered. As much as teachers can lecture, I have learned that it is not often the most effective way for students to learn. Therefore I have learned that it is important for students to use skills in activate stages and even in study stage activities, for students to work in pairs or small groups as that would help reduce the pressure and help students learn and feel more comfortable. Having left my teaching position and now managing teachers, I feel that the knowledge I have gained is extremely helpful for training teachers and helping them understand their role as a class facilitator more. I want to use this knowledge to help increase student ? teacher rapport as I have learned from experience and this course that it is extremely important to a class?s success. Also, establishing a needs analysis in order to understand student goals is another vital lesson learned. Although I am not sure as to what my next career move will be, I feel that I have gained phenomenal knowledge and I can use this in future interactions that help me not only interacting but it will also help me interact with people of different cultures who speak different languages and for me that is invaluable.
