Cultural variety provides all students with the opportunity to learn about ways of life that from their own. In a multicultural environment, students learn to be more culturally aware. Teachers sometimes struggle to create a classroom that is culturally sensitive and responsive to the needs of their students. Everywhere teachers are attempting to make their classrooms more culturally sensitive and to create lesson plans that are rich with information about the diversity in their community. These efforts by teachers to be more sensitive and consciously aware of the different backgrounds of their students is beneficial to both the teachers and the students as cultural awareness allows for better learning experience. Cultural tendencies impact the way children participate in education. to engage students effectively in the learning process, teachers must know their students and their academic abilities individually, rather than relying on racial or ethnic stereotypes or prior experience with other students of similar background. Learning styles can also be influenced by culture. Students from certain cultures may learn best by observing then doing. However, it could be that these students come from cultures where they learn by watching their parents or teachers do the task first before they try it themselves which further shows the importance of being culturally aware. The ability of us as future teachers to acknowledge the existence of cultural differences and similarities without assigning them a value is very critical and important to our teaching careers. For example, teaching a class in Thailand without awareness of the culture and traditions of the country could lead you to being accused of breaking laws that you did not even know about and could lead to state punishment. For instances, not taking off your shoes in a classroom in Thailand before entering. One of the ways to becoming more culturally sensitive in the classroom in expressing interest in the ethnic background of each student. This is a simple way that allows the teacher to become more informed about a students ethnic background. This is also a good way to establish rebate with the students as it allows the students to feel more comfortable around the teacher. Another way to being more culturally sensitive involves the maintenance of a strict level of sensitivity to language concerns. This is well known that in most cultures the use of swear words is not tolerated. This would prove especially challenging for teacher who use inappropriate words in the presence of students which would in turn show unprofessional-ism. There is a high chance of immediate termination of your contract from teaching and could even raise to the point of ejection from that particular country. In conclusion, I personally believe that having cultural sensitivity in the classroom is important because it allows us to effectively function together with our students, allows us to respect and value the cultures of our students, and can reduce cultural barriers between professional teachers and their students. Furthermore if any teacher struggles with embracing diversity, it is important that you are not afraid of offending your student as this arises in a very important lesson for you as a teacher to pay closer attention to the importance of cultural diversity and sensitivity in the teaching world.
