Grammar is the keystone of English communication, the misuse of fundamental grammatical principles leads to a jamming effect reducing the flow of natural conversation and reducing true communication. Even small misunderstandings can snowball leading to large communicative problems, for example the misuse of tense "I was late" v.s (I will be late) can lead a customer or employer great difficulty in understanding ones intentions. More over the proper use of grammar makes written English flow in a pleasing way, if we constantly have to stop and consider the true intention of the author as we reed it destroys the ambiance of the written word. The correct use of grammar is crucial in a work environment be it giving a presentation or communication via email with customers. For example when one gives a presentation on a project to a group of colleges using the wrong tense can cores confusion, using the past simple "I was working on this project" v.s the past perfect "I have been working on this project" gives a vastly different impression. The first example could indicate that the project has been completed where as the second example indicates that the project is still under way. More over when speaking with a customer via email saying "I'm sorry the delivery was late" v.s "will be late" can leave the customer felling confused and will ultimately wast time for everyone. When it comes to personal interactions proper grammar usage is a key component to building rapport with the ones we feel close to as well as business partners. Psychologists have noted that the repetition of "Golden Moments" (moments in witch a group of people all laugh at the same exact time) are a fundamental predictor of the speed at which close relationships form. These moments can only happen in social interactions where the conversation flows in a natural (grammatically correct) way, If we have to stop to think about someones exact meaning because they use grammar incorrectly. This is of crucial importance simply because although the most obvious use for language is to convey information what is the use of conveying information to a person we don't have a favorable relation ship with. We all want to be friends with our customers and make friends with foreigners. Although this course goes into detail on many different styles of teaching in my opinion viewing grammar as the central emphasis of the classroom makes the most sense because it has the largest impact on the ability to be understood clearly when attempting to communicate effectively. Take for example pronunciation or idioms, although pronunciation is important the variety of English pronunciation within English speaking countries is so vast that a foreign learner with a sum what hard to understand accent can still be understood to are large degree by most native speakers. More over idioms that are learnt by say the Chinese for example "long time no see" is an extremely popular tern of phrase among chines English learners but is almost never said by native speakers showing that these small garnishes of the English language although useful in some respect pale in comparison to a working knowledge of grammar.
