I have been teaching English for 6 years now. I have started with Cambridge classes and follow up with taking many different types of classes. Besides Cambridge Starters, Movers, and Flyers, I now also teach Jolly Phonics, Letterland Phonics, Jumpstart Read-and-write, Speakperfect, Grammar Building, Write Well, Secondary School Interviews, kindergarten Interviews, Playgroups and Speaking Classes. I work as a Freelancer. For the first three days of the week, Monday to Wednesday, I work as a Full Time English Net Teacher in a local primary school in Hong Kong. For Thursday to Sunday, I work as a Part Time English Net Teacher in different local schools and local tutoring centres. For my Full Time Job, I mainly co-teach Primary 4 to Primary 6 students with local English Teachers. I have been teaching in this school for 4 years now. I mainly teach local Chinese Students, focusing on their English Speaking Skills. I usually hold pair works among students and individual presentations so that the students can practice and get more confidence by talking to each other before presenting in front of the class. For that particular school, we have 6 classes per level, and in each level there are 3 different levels of students with different abilities. We have 2 big classes of 40 students who are more able and can understand and speak fluent English. We also have 3 small classes of 30 students who are less able to speak or understand English but as time goes by, I can see they are more willing to learn and participate in English speaking tasks. Although, they might make a few mistakes while speaking, I can see their confidence is boosting day in and day out. Lastly, we also have 1 class which is the smallest also known as the pull out class with only 10 students. These 10 students are the bottom 10 students for the level for their overall academics. For them even basic phonics sounds or kindergarten level words are hard such as apple, boy, car and so on. These kids need the teachers to help them write the words for them as their English level is just as the beginner. For big classes, the local teachers do not want me to give too many guidelines to the students as they are more able and they can easily perform a task with just simple instructions. For smaller classes, I explain the task to the students and do a demonstration along with the local teacher and ask if the students know what to do, if not, we will invite a few students and do an example with them. For the pull out class, I usually do the same as the small classes however, the local teachers will also translate the whole task in Chinese. This helps the students understand what I am saying. I usually make their task a lot simpler and with pictures and words given so that learning English can be fun and easy for them. We usually have a fill in the blank for the speaking task so that they have an outline on what to say. On other days, I work with different agents who help me assign after school classes in different local schools and learning centres. I teach students of different age groups, from 2 years old play groups to Secondary 3 students. I enjoy doing these classes a lot since these classes are mainly after school, I do not co-teach with any local teachers and the class sizes are usually around 5-20. For after school classes, I teach students from Primary 1 to Secondary 3 students. I feel the teaching atmosphere is more relaxed as the students join these classes based on their own interests and are willing to speak English. Over the past few years, I have conducted different types of after school classes, such as grammar building, story writing, interview classes and so on. And for the learning centres, I usually teach playgroups and kindergarten students. I conduct mock interviews for Kindergarten 1 to 3 students and for playgroups we usually use flashcards and colour blocks and many different fun activities to teach. I enjoy teaching and I think teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs as we teachers get to be the reason of the students smile after they successfully accomplished a task. I have also learnt that as a teacher I may need to change my roles and talk to my students as friends so that I can understand them and their strengths and weaknesses in order to make and change my class materials. Being a teacher, I feel I, myself, am learning everyday along with my students. I feel satisfied when I see my students being able to speak in front of the class and in public. This helps them in gaining confidence and thus increases their self-esteem as well as mine.
