Reading and listening are receptive skills and allow us to take in information. For a new English learner, it is important to activate both reading and listening skills during lessons so that students can engage with the language both when written and spoken. This means including material that is appropriate for the skill level and is also interesting to students. Over time, a teacher should be presenting all kinds of different materials for engaging receptive skills so that students are genuinely interested by the material and therefore pay better attention to the lesson at hand.
