The unit suggests some useful ways that the teacher can get student to have a desire, if that desire does not already exist, to communicate in English. It stresses the difference between accuracy and fluency and makes the point that both are of equal importance. I found it interesting that the unit stated that writing tends to be neglected. If that is true, and I suspect it is, this has changed greatly since I studied foreign languages in high school and college; writing was then dominant in the course. That English is not a phonetic language, with so many quirky spelling, presents a particular problem for the teacher.
