I personally found the past tense verb forms easier to comprehend. Perhaps because I am now familiar with each verb form in the present tense and each follow similar rules of conjugation. For example, continuous verb forms (past or present) use the verb form of 'to be' plus the '-ing form of the verb.' Perfect continuous forms (past or present) use the verb 'to have' plus 'been' plus the '-ing form of the verb.' While there are almost always exceptions to the rules, such as in the use of irregular verbs such as go, see, and buy, having a recognizable set of rules or patterns makes it easier to understand sentence structure.
