This unit talks about teaching productive skills and what tools teachers can utilize to best teach these skills as well what obstacles and challenges there can be. Productive skills, which consist of two of the four language learning skills are: speaking and writing. Writing tends to often be the least taught skill but is nevertheless equally as important as the other skills. The productive skills focus on on two main areas, fluency and accuracy. Accuracy, although applicable to both skills is more of a writing-centric area of concern, where as the same can be said for fluency but with a spoken-centric expectation. Accuracy in writing can be fraught with many challenges as the student’s native languages may vary quite differently, including even the direction text is written or the alphabet used. With fluency, the aim to illicit effective communication even if it is not necessarily fundamentally correct.
