The two productive skills are speaking and writing. Each of these are very different from each other in respect of the English language and each one is taught differently. When teaching speaking skills it is important to have a controlled activity when introducing new vocabulary, such as drills and prompting. Students should understand and feel confident with the language before they attempt fluency activities. Some examples of fluency activities would be role-play, debates and the information gap excercise which uses communication to get a complete idea. To teach writing is quite different. Students have to obtain an understanding of written vs. spoken English, formal vs. informal writing styles, as well as spelling and punctuation. Creative writing projects are very useful to activate the students writing skills and to encourage their interest in communicating in English.
