The uses for 'if' and 'when' are bountiful. For native speakers we just roll the words off of our tongues in sentences but this helped explained the how and why we do it. Non-native speakers could see using conditionals as words to help their grammar and sentence structure flow. Just like the usage of articles and verb tenses, conditionals not only make the language sound smoother, it keeps from the steady confusion. Helping the students understand how direct speeches get transformed to reported speeches based on the type of conversation a student will have is a major factor and player in their success as an ESL graduate.
