This chapter details the four basic skills in learning and using language. The four basic skills include reading and listening, which are considered Receptive skills and speaking and writing, which are speaking and writing skills. There are motives for using reading and listening skills. People tend to participate in these activities for two main categories, for a purpose or entertainment. Reading and listening skills must incorporate our thinking skills as well. The chapter explains why people read or listen to information and how we use it. It expands to detail what are some issues or problems in teaching these skills.
