This unit teaches the principles behind teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening and each include specialized skills such as scanning, skimming, predicting, reading for detail, and deducting from context. When teaching receptive skills it is particularly important to carefully select texts and topics that suit the students language level and have a variety so that all interests are met. Getting students interested in the topic through discussion in the engage stage and pre-teaching difficult vocabulary as the first part of the study stage will help students learn these skills more effectively.
