There are a variety of factors for a teacher to think through when designing lessons around a course book. The benefit of a good course book is that it allows both the teacher and the students to have structure in the lessons and curriculum planning. However, if a teacher relies too much on the course book, it may become predictive or boring to the students. It's always ideal for the teacher to keep the student's interests alive by supplementing the course book with either created materials, such as a cross-word, gap-fill, or role playing cards, or with authentic material, any material that a native speaker might consume.
