This unit provides an overview of the different type of tests commonly used in the ESL classroom. Placement tests are commonly used before the course begins to ensure that students are placed in the correct class. Diagnostic tests are often given at the start of a course; they are similar to placement tests, but provide more in-depth information. Progress tests are given throughout the course to check students' comprehension and retention of new material. External exams are given outside the language school, often by such large tentmakers as Cambridge, and practice tests for these tests are given at language schools.
