This unit covered the important topic of pronunciation. It explained what is intonation and what is stress, giving pertinent examples so that the different meaning is understood as conveyed by different intonation. Unstressed syllables were also mentioned in this unit. Another topic was the way in which English words are joined up in the spoken language, which can involve additional sounds, dropped or modified sounds. I had never paid much attention to the phonetic alphabet, but now understand that it is a very useful skill to have as an English language teacher, as it empowers students to pronounce any word accurately.
