As I read through the various receptive skills in detail, I can't help but wonder how my accent (Boston, Massachusetts, USA) might affect a student's comprehension, usage, and later ability to communicate effectively. A possible remedy would be to play an audio tape or short movie clip, both during the Engage phase and then during the activate phase in order for the student to detect the difference and to consider the more common pronunciations and usages. Reading skills are also helpful in this regard, in that the student will learn to comprehend the meaning of the word(s) in context despite regional accent differences.
