I learned the importance of how the breakdown the sounds work in learning the English language. For instance, even the rhythm and where you put the emphasis in a sentence can entire change its meaning. Also, the order of letters and sounds can make for some tricky instances where sounds are joined together or simply removed completely. The phonetic alphabet is a tool used to correct this in that you can spell out sentences using symbols for each of the sounds to show how it's read completely. Also knowing which part of the mouth that each sound comes from is useful in teaching the students to replicate words and phrases.
