As I have been teaching pre-school children in Japan, one of the initial ways of learning a new language or even one?s native language is by hearing or listening to the spoken words around them. In that way, they can imitate what they hear and try to speak it. Then when they are in the school age, they start to learn to read with a teacher?s guidance. One thing I am also careful about is selecting reading texts for my adult students. I have encountered in this unit the variety of authentic and non-authentic texts. I would be reading more about this so as to be able to provide good choices of reading materials.
