This unit covers best practices for testing and evaluating students on their knowledge of English as a foreign language. It includes a sample placement test for potential use by the instructor. Other tests described include diagnostic, progress, and external tests. Some tests of the Cambridge Assessment are the KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE, along with the skills for life test for immigrants. Other general tests outside the Cambridge Assessment family are the IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC. However, the unit points out that continual assessment by the instructor is often the most effective way of evaluating students' progress.
