This unit focused on a variety of potential problems in ESL classrooms, such as the use of students' native language, reluctance to participate, large class sizes, mixed-ability classes, and difficulties with listening texts. The unit also provided a number of techniques to try when teaching the first class of a course (particularly with a new, rather than existing, group of students). A particular emphasis was placed on establishing rapport with students and encouraging them to practice speaking English as often as possible - a recurring theme throughout the course which was effectively driven home in this final unit.
