The different forms of the past tense can be much more difficult for students to understand as compared to the present tense. While the 4 forms are \"the same\" as those of the present tense, there is a lot more nuance in the meaning being conveyed as compared to when the present forms are used, for example, \"I went to the shop\" versus \"I was shopping\". Also, the nuances can be slightly confusing for students because they may not simply be a \"past\" form of the \"present\" tense. For example, \"I shop\" can mean that it's a habit or routine, whereas \"I shopped\" may just be a specific singular completed action.
