It is important to be able to distinguish the different forms of present tense in English. Knowing their appropriate forms and common errors that non-English speakers make will help me to be prepared for providing good feedback to those in my classes. There are four basic present tense forms: present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. Because of the different uses and auxiliary verbs used in some of these forms, it is easy for a non-native speaker to become confused. The better I know these forms and their uses, the better the assistance I can offer to those who are learning.
