Lesson plans are road maps. Details matter and can help not only the teacher remain calm, but also the students. In my teaching experience, learning objectives are critical in the development of a lesson. It is also important to make sure that this is not just posted on a board, but used in the daily routine of a classroom. My students come in with an engagement question, then read the expectations and learning goals for the day. Making this simple change in my lessons has helped with engagement and student accountability in their learning. This is also very helpful when dealing with specific behaviors. If the expectation is understood with both a learning goal and behavior choice, it creates a standard that all students can work to achieve.
