This unit with two ESA demonstration videos on how to teach a Thai class English was very effective both for new and experienced ESL teachers. I watched these videos at least two times and found them both to be very helpful and instructive in a creative way. As an experienced teacher, it was very difficult to watch the first video. I felt so bad for the students and was mad at the teacher for his sorry attitude toward the students and how disrespectful he was toward them. I loved and was positively impacted on the second video. The difference between the two was like night and day. From the very beginning of the second video the teacher showed the class respect and was so positive, told the students his name, found out their names and smiled the entire class time. I wish I had seen these videos or something like them when I first started teaching many, many years ago. These videos are instructional and are a great resource even if you are not teaching ESL students. The main idea I got from these videos is that the teacher's attitude and respect or lack thereof for the students will determine the outcome, the rapport and the effectiveness of both the class as a whole and the individual students. If the teachers attitude and respect for the students is positive and affirming, then it will positively impact the students learning and response in class. If the opposite occurs, the class goes nowhere and has a very negative impact on the lesson and on the class as a whole. The teacher's attitude can cause the class to soar or crash and have a lasting impact on future ESL student classes.
