Thus unit on teaching receptive skills is vitally important. Reading and listening are equally important in understanding any language, especially English. Students need to know the difference between reading for a purpose - getting directions to a specific place or event and reading for entertainment - reading a favorite novel or adventure book. How we read and listen is equally important. It's not just reading and listening with our eyes and with our ears, but also using our minds to understand the context and culture of a situation, story or event. Text topics are very important in order for the student to learn and to be able to relate to what is being taught. Choosing something that will hold their interest is key to helping the student to grasp the topic they are studying. This was a very helpful unit for me as a teacher of ESL students as well as for those who already speak English fluently.
