Learning materials for students are divided into authentic materials and created materials. The former are everyday materials such a newspapers, magazines, radio recordings etc. The latter are materials created by teachers. Created materials can be tailored made for the specific teaching aims and level of the target students, whereas authentic materials must be selected carefully for the task at hand. Course books can be handy for teaching. They mainly provide a true and tested way for teaching. The main disadvantage is that it's a compromise and tailored for a general audience but not a specific one.
