Having taken several language courses myself, I can definitely see the negative AND positive aspects to using a course book, as well as how important it is to choose the right course book to use. Using a book that is outdated or not geared towards the correct level of the student can be extremely frustrating for everyone involved. I appreciated the pointers that this book gave in selecting a course book, as well as the emphasis on supplementing whatever you do chose to use and not relying on it exclusively. I can see how as a new teacher a course book would be very helpful in creating a structure for the class, but also how you would still need to prepare your own materials and added supplements to get the best use out of the book's material and still keep your students engaged.
