In this Unit I learned about the importance of receptive skills such as listening and reading. Listening and reading occur either for a purpose, or for pleasure/entertainment. There are also a number of skills employed while listening/reading, depending on the goal: predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming though text, looking for detailed information, deduction from text. When teaching receptive skills, the teacher needs to take into consideration not only level of students, but also their interests in order to motivate them with new information. Texts should be carefully selected and new words/phrases should be pre-taught to students in order to enhance their understanding of texts. For a typical ESA lesson, an Engage phase should spark students' interest about an upcoming topic. For a study phase, the teacher explains new vocabulary that is used in the text, than the text is given. Upon completion of reading, students are given different study drills based on the text that would help to further their understanding of it. For an activate phase we should employ activities that somehow relate to the subject of reading and encourage students to use the new vocabulary
